Best conductor of electricity?

Single correct option

Which one of the following is the best conductor of electricity?
  1. A. Diamond
  2. B. Graphite
  3. C. Charcoal powder dissolved in water
  4. D. Silicon dioxide
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) Graphite

In graphite each carbon is bonded to three others in layers, leaving one free delocalised electron per atom, which conducts electricity. In diamond all four valence electrons are in covalent bonds, so it is an insulator, and silicon dioxide has no free electrons either. Charcoal in water does not form a conducting solution.
