Single correct option
Electrolysis of an aqueous solution of sodium chloride (brine) produces
- A. sodium, chlorine and water
- B. oxygen, hydrogen and sodium
- C. chlorine, oxygen and sodium
- D. chlorine, hydrogen and sodium hydroxide
Show answer and solution
Answer: (D) chlorine, hydrogen and sodium hydroxide
In the chlor-alkali process chlorine gas collects at the anode, hydrogen gas at the cathode and sodium hydroxide remains in solution. Sodium is not liberated from the aqueous solution, as water is reduced in preference to Na+. Sodium is obtained only by electrolysis of molten sodium chloride.
