Pure distilled water is a good conductor of electricity. 2. Dissolving common salt in water makes it conduct electricity.

Single correct option

Consider the following statements.
1. Pure distilled water is a good conductor of electricity.
2. Dissolving common salt in water makes it conduct electricity.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2 only

Pure water has almost no free ions, so it is a very poor conductor and statement 1 is wrong. Sodium chloride dissociates into Na+ and Cl- ions in water, and these mobile ions carry current, so statement 2 is correct. This is why tap water, which has dissolved salts, is dangerous around electrical appliances.
