Single correct option
Consider the following statements about electrolysis of water:
1. Hydrogen and oxygen are obtained in the volume ratio 2 : 1.
2. Hydrogen gas is collected at the anode.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
1. Hydrogen and oxygen are obtained in the volume ratio 2 : 1.
2. Hydrogen gas is collected at the anode.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
- A. 1 only
- B. 2 only
- C. Both 1 and 2
- D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution
Answer: (A) 1 only
Water, H2O, contains two hydrogen atoms for every oxygen atom, and electrolysis releases the gases in the ratio 2:1 by volume, so statement 1 is correct. Hydrogen ions gain electrons and hence form hydrogen at the cathode, the negative electrode, whereas oxygen is liberated at the anode. Statement 2 is therefore wrong. A few drops of acid are added to make water conduct.
