Single correct option

A circle of radius 55 lies in the first quadrant and touches the y-axis at the point (0,3)(0,3). Its centre is
  1. A. (3,5)(3,5)
  2. B. (5,3)(5,3)
  3. C. (0,5)(0,5)
  4. D. (5,0)(5,0)
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) (5,3)(5,3)

A circle touching the y-axis at (0,3)(0,3) has its centre on the horizontal line through that point, y=3y=3, at distance equal to the radius from the axis. In the first quadrant the centre is (5,3)(5,3). The point (3,5)(3,5) swaps the roles of the axes; it would touch the x-axis at (3,0)(3,0).
