For every non-zero complex number z, arg z+argbar z=0 (principal arguments). 2. For n>1, the sum of all the nth roots of unity is zero.

Single correct option

Consider the following statements:
1. For every non-zero complex number zz, arg⁡z+arg⁡zˉ=0\arg z+\arg\bar z=0 (principal arguments).
2. For n>1n>1, the sum of all the nnth roots of unity is zero.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2 only

Statement 1 fails for negative real zz: with z=−1z=-1 the principal argument is π\pi for both zz and zˉ=−1\bar z=-1, so the sum is 2π2\pi, not 00. Statement 2 is true: the roots are 1,ζ,…,ζn−11,\zeta,\ldots,\zeta^{n-1} in a geometric series with ratio ζ≠1\zeta\neq1, whose sum is ζn−1ζ−1=0\dfrac{\zeta^n-1}{\zeta-1}=0. Hence only statement 2 is correct.
