If z+1/z=1, then z^12 equals

Single correct option

If z+1z=1z+\dfrac1z=1, then z12z^{12} equals
  1. A. −1-1
  2. B. ii
  3. C. 00
  4. D. 11
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 11

From z2−z+1=0z^2-z+1=0 we get z=1±i32=cos⁡π3±isin⁡π3z=\dfrac{1\pm i\sqrt3}{2}=\cos\dfrac\pi3\pm i\sin\dfrac\pi3. Then z12=cos⁡4π±isin⁡4π=1z^{12}=\cos4\pi\pm i\sin4\pi=1. Alternatively z3=−1z^3=-1 (multiply by z+1z+1), so z6=1z^6=1 and z12=1z^{12}=1. The value −1-1 is z3z^3, a common stop-short error.
