For a complex number z: 1. zbar z=|z|^2. 2. |bar z|=|z|.

Single correct option

Consider the following statements for a complex number zz:
1. zzˉ=∣z∣2z\bar z=|z|^2.
2. ∣zˉ∣=∣z∣|\bar z|=|z|.
Which of the statements is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Both 1 and 2

If z=x+iyz=x+iy then zzˉ=x2+y2=∣z∣2z\bar z=x^2+y^2=|z|^2, so statement 1 holds. The conjugate x−iyx-iy has the same modulus x2+y2\sqrt{x^2+y^2}, so statement 2 also holds. Both are true for every complex zz, and both are used constantly in simplifying quotients.
