The number of integers n with 1≤ n≤ 20 for which (1+i)^n is a real number is

Single correct option

The number of integers nn with 1≤n≤201\le n\le 20 for which (1+i)n(1+i)^n is a real number is
  1. A. 4
  2. B. 5
  3. C. 10
  4. D. 20
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 5

(1+i)n=2n/2(cos⁡nπ4+isin⁡nπ4)(1+i)^n=2^{n/2}\left(\cos\frac{n\pi}4+i\sin\frac{n\pi}4\right) is real only when sin⁡nπ4=0\sin\frac{n\pi}4=0, i.e. nn is a multiple of 44: 4,8,12,16,204,8,12,16,20, giving 55 values. Counting multiples of 22 (where (1+i)2=2i(1+i)^2=2i is purely imaginary) gives the trap value 1010.
