The eccentricity of the rectangular hyperbola x^2-y^2=a^2 is

Single correct option

The eccentricity of the rectangular hyperbola x2−y2=a2x^2-y^2=a^2 is
  1. A. 22
  2. B. 12\dfrac{1}{\sqrt2}
  3. C. 2\sqrt2
  4. D. 11
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 2\sqrt2

Here the transverse and conjugate semi-axes are both aa, so b2=a2b^2=a^2 and e=1+b2a2=2e=\sqrt{1+\frac{b^2}{a^2}}=\sqrt2. The value 12\frac1{\sqrt2} is less than 11, which is impossible for a hyperbola, 11 is the eccentricity of a parabola, and 22 forgets the square root.
