The line y=x+k touches the ellipse (x^2/(9)+(y^2/(4)=1 for k equal to

Single correct option

The line y=x+ky=x+k touches the ellipse x29+y24=1\frac{x^2}{9}+\frac{y^2}{4}=1 for kk equal to
  1. A. ±13\pm\sqrt{13}
  2. B. ±5\pm5
  3. C. ±5\pm\sqrt5
  4. D. ±1\pm1
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) ±13\pm\sqrt{13}

For the ellipse x2a2+y2b2=1\frac{x^2}{a^2}+\frac{y^2}{b^2}=1 the line y=mx+cy=mx+c is tangent iff c2=a2m2+b2c^2=a^2m^2+b^2. Here m=1m=1, so k2=9+4=13k^2=9+4=13 and k=±13k=\pm\sqrt{13}. Trap: subtracting (9−4=59-4=5, which is c2c^2 of the foci) or using the circle condition gives the other options.
