The function f(x)=begincasesax+3,&x≤2\x^2-1,&x>2endcases is continuous at x=2 if a is equal to

Single correct option

The function f(x)={ax+3,x≤2x2−1,x>2f(x)=\begin{cases}ax+3,&x\le2\\x^2-1,&x>2\end{cases} is continuous at x=2x=2 if aa is equal to
  1. A. 11
  2. B. 00
  3. C. −1-1
  4. D. 22
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 00

The left value is f(2)=2a+3f(2)=2a+3 and the right limit is 22−1=32^2-1=3. Continuity requires 2a+3=32a+3=3, so a=0a=0. The options 11, −1-1 and 22 arise by equating 2a2a to the wrong quantity, for example using x2−1x^2-1 at x=1x=1 or comparing aa with 33.
