The system of equations x+y+z=0, x-y+z=0, 2x+2z=0 has

Single correct option

The system of equations x+y+z=0x+y+z=0, x−y+z=0x-y+z=0, 2x+2z=02x+2z=0 has
  1. A. only the trivial solution
  2. B. no solution
  3. C. infinitely many solutions
  4. D. exactly two solutions
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) infinitely many solutions

A homogeneous system always has the trivial solution. Adding the first two equations gives 2x+2z=02x+2z=0, which is the third equation, so the three equations are dependent and the determinant is zero. Subtracting gives y=0y=0 and x=−zx=-z, a one-parameter family of solutions, hence infinitely many.
