Single correct option

The value of the determinant ∣1111241416∣\begin{vmatrix}1&1&1\\1&2&4\\1&4&16\end{vmatrix} is
  1. A. −6-6
  2. B. 66
  3. C. 1212
  4. D. 88
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 66

The rows are (1,a,a2)(1,a,a^2) for a=1,2,4a=1,2,4, a Vandermonde determinant equal to (2−1)(4−1)(4−2)=1⋅3⋅2=6(2-1)(4-1)(4-2)=1\cdot3\cdot2=6. The order of subtraction matters: reversing it gives −6-6. Direct expansion along the first row gives (32−16)−(16−4)+(4−2)⋅(32-16)-(16-4)+(4-2)\cdot with the same total.
