If A and B are 3×3 matrices with |A|=2 and |B|=3, then |2A^-1B| equals

Single correct option

If AA and BB are 3×33\times3 matrices with ∣A∣=2|A|=2 and ∣B∣=3|B|=3, then ∣2A−1B∣|2A^{-1}B| equals
  1. A. 1212
  2. B. 66
  3. C. 33
  4. D. 2424
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1212

Use ∣kM∣=k3∣M∣|kM|=k^3|M| for a 3×33\times3 matrix, ∣A−1∣=1∣A∣|A^{-1}|=\dfrac1{|A|} and ∣MN∣=∣M∣∣N∣|MN|=|M||N|. Then ∣2A−1B∣=23⋅12⋅3=8×12×3=12|2A^{-1}B|=2^3\cdot\dfrac12\cdot3=8\times\dfrac12\times3=12. The value 33 forgets the scalar's factor 232^3, and 2424 forgets to invert AA.
