Find the general solution of the equation xdy/dx+y=x^2 for x>0.

Single correct option

Find the general solution of the equation xdydx+y=x2x\dfrac{dy}{dx}+y=x^2 for x>0x>0.
  1. A. y=x33+Cy=\dfrac{x^3}3+C
  2. B. xy=x22+Cxy=\dfrac{x^2}2+C
  3. C. xy=x33+Cxy=\dfrac{x^3}3+C
  4. D. y=x2+Cy=x^2+C
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) xy=x33+Cxy=\dfrac{x^3}3+C

The left side is ddx(xy)\frac{d}{dx}(xy), so ddx(xy)=x2\frac{d}{dx}(xy)=x^2 and xy=x33+Cxy=\frac{x^3}3+C, i.e. y=x23+Cxy=\frac{x^2}3+\frac Cx. The option y=x33+Cy=\frac{x^3}{3}+C ignores the product xyxy, xy=x22+Cxy=\frac{x^2}2+C integrates xx instead of x2x^2, and y=x2+Cy=x^2+C is not a solution.
