Single correct option
The chemical formula of quicklime is
- A. Ca(OH)2
- B. CaCO3
- C. CaCl2
- D. CaO
Show answer and solution
Answer: (D) CaO
Quicklime is calcium oxide, CaO, obtained by heating limestone (CaCO3), which also releases carbon dioxide. When water is added it reacts vigorously to give slaked lime, Ca(OH)2, with release of heat. Limestone is CaCO3 and CaCl2 is calcium chloride, a drying agent. These are the substances that students commonly mix up.
