Neither of the two answers ___ correct.

Single correct option

Neither of the two answers ___ correct.
  1. A. is
  2. B. are
  3. C. were
  4. D. have been
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) is

'Neither' is singular and takes a singular verb. The plural noun 'answers' after 'of the two' misleads many learners to choose 'are'. Present tense 'is' suits a general statement. Strike out the intervening phrase, find the real subject, and then decide whether the verb should be singular or plural; this habit quickly removes most such traps.
