Lim x→3(x^3-27)/(x^2-9) is equal to

Single correct option

lim⁡x→3x3−27x2−9\displaystyle\lim_{x\to3}\dfrac{x^3-27}{x^2-9} is equal to
  1. A. 33
  2. B. 92\dfrac92
  3. C. 272\dfrac{27}{2}
  4. D. 99
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 92\dfrac92

Factor: x3−27=(x−3)(x2+3x+9)x^3-27=(x-3)(x^2+3x+9) and x2−9=(x−3)(x+3)x^2-9=(x-3)(x+3). After cancelling x−3x-3 the limit is 9+9+96=276=92\dfrac{9+9+9}{6}=\dfrac{27}{6}=\dfrac92. By L'Hospital's rule the same value is 3x22x\dfrac{3x^2}{2x} at x=3x=3, which is 276\dfrac{27}{6}. The value 272\dfrac{27}{2} is the numerator's derivative at 33 divided by 22 in error, and 99 is 3x2/(x)3x^2/(x) miscomputed.
