Single correct option

A regular polygon with nn sides is inscribed in a circle of radius 11. As n→∞n\to\infty, the perimeter of the polygon tends to
  1. A. π\pi
  2. B. 44
  3. C. ∞\infty
  4. D. 2π2\pi
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 2π2\pi

Each side subtends an angle 2πn\frac{2\pi}{n} at the centre, so its length is 2sin⁡πn2\sin\frac{\pi}{n} and the perimeter is 2nsin⁡πn=2π⋅sin⁡(π/n)π/n2n\sin\frac\pi n=2\pi\cdot\frac{\sin(\pi/n)}{\pi/n}. As n→∞n\to\infty the ratio tends to 11, giving 2π2\pi, the circumference. The value π\pi is the semicircle, and ∞\infty is a false conclusion from n→∞n\to\infty.
