The value of lim x→0(|x|)/(x) is

Single correct option

The value of lim⁡x→0∣x∣x\displaystyle\lim_{x\to0}\dfrac{|x|}{x} is
  1. A. 11
  2. B. does not exist
  3. C. −1-1
  4. D. 00
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) does not exist

For x>0x>0, ∣x∣x=1\frac{|x|}{x}=1, while for x<0x<0 it equals −1-1. The right-hand limit is 11 and the left-hand limit is −1-1; they differ, so the limit does not exist. Answering 00 comes from substituting into the numerator alone. A limit exists only when both one-sided limits agree.
