The value of lim x→0(1-cos 3x)/(1-cos 5x) is

Single correct option

The value of lim⁡x→01−cos⁡3x1−cos⁡5x\displaystyle\lim_{x\to0}\dfrac{1-\cos3x}{1-\cos5x} is
  1. A. 35\dfrac35
  2. B. 259\dfrac{25}9
  3. C. 53\dfrac53
  4. D. 925\dfrac9{25}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 925\dfrac9{25}

Use 1−cos⁡kx≈k2x221-\cos kx\approx\frac{k^2x^2}2 as x→0x\to0. The ratio becomes 9x2/225x2/2=925\frac{9x^2/2}{25x^2/2}=\frac9{25}. The value 35\frac35 forgets to square the coefficients, and 259\frac{25}9 and 53\frac53 invert the ratio. Equivalently, 2sin⁡2(3x/2)2sin⁡2(5x/2)\frac{2\sin^2(3x/2)}{2\sin^2(5x/2)} gives the same.
