Single correct option

An ideal transformer has 200 turns in its primary coil and 1000 turns in its secondary coil. If the input voltage is 220 V AC, the output voltage is
  1. A. 1100 V
  2. B. 44 V
  3. C. 220 V
  4. D. 4400 V
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1100 V

For an ideal transformer Vs/Vp = Ns/Np, so Vs = 220 × 1000/200 = 1100 V. It is a step-up transformer as Ns exceeds Np. The value 44 V comes from inverting the ratio. A transformer does not change frequency, and the output current falls by the same factor so power is conserved.
