A step-up transformer increases the voltage and decreases the current. 2. A transformer can be operated with a steady direct current.

Single correct option

Consider the following statements:
1. A step-up transformer increases the voltage and decreases the current.
2. A transformer can be operated with a steady direct current.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1 only

In a step-up transformer the secondary has more turns than the primary, so the voltage rises, and since power is nearly conserved, the current falls. A transformer works on mutual induction, which needs a changing magnetic flux; a steady DC gives constant flux and no induced emf in the secondary. Statement 2 is therefore false.
