Let A=beginpmatrix1&2\\0&1endpmatrix and B=beginpmatrix1&0\\2&1endpmatrix. The determinant of AB-BA is

Single correct option

Let A=(1201)A=\begin{pmatrix}1&2\\0&1\end{pmatrix} and B=(1021)B=\begin{pmatrix}1&0\\2&1\end{pmatrix}. The determinant of AB−BAAB-BA is
  1. A. 1616
  2. B. 00
  3. C. −8-8
  4. D. −16-16
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) −16-16

AB=(5221)AB=\begin{pmatrix}5&2\\2&1\end{pmatrix} and BA=(1225)BA=\begin{pmatrix}1&2\\2&5\end{pmatrix}, so AB−BA=(400−4)AB-BA=\begin{pmatrix}4&0\\0&-4\end{pmatrix} with determinant −16-16. Assuming AB=BAAB=BA would give 00, which is the trap: matrix multiplication is not commutative.
