In 1761 the Maratha army under Sadashivrao Bhau was crushed at Panipat by the Afghan ruler Ahmad Shah Abdali, who was supported by Najib-ud-Daulah and the Nawab of Awadh. The defeat weakened Maratha power in north India. Nadir Shah invaded in 1739, Ibrahim Lodi lost to Babur in 1526, and Hemu was defeated by Akbar's forces in 1556.
