Single correct option
Iron articles are galvanised to prevent rusting by coating them with a layer of
- A. tin
- B. zinc
- C. copper
- D. lead
Show answer and solution
Answer: (B) zinc
Galvanisation coats iron with zinc. Zinc is more reactive than iron, so even if the coating is scratched it corrodes in preference to iron, a protection called sacrificial. Tin is less reactive than iron, so a scratched tin plate speeds up rusting of the iron below. Copper and lead are not used for this purpose.
