The cosine of its largest angle is

Single correct option

The sides of a triangle are 44, 55 and 66. The cosine of its largest angle is
  1. A. 34\dfrac34
  2. B. 916\dfrac9{16}
  3. C. 18\dfrac18
  4. D. 12\dfrac12
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 18\dfrac18

The largest angle is opposite the longest side 66. By the cosine rule cos⁡C=42+52−622⋅4⋅5=540=18\cos C=\dfrac{4^2+5^2-6^2}{2\cdot4\cdot5}=\dfrac{5}{40}=\dfrac18. The options 34\tfrac34 and 916\tfrac9{16} are cos⁡A\cos A and cos⁡B\cos B for the angles opposite sides 44 and 55 respectively.
