The number of integer values of k for which 2x^2+kx+8>0 for every real x is

Single correct option

The number of integer values of kk for which 2x2+kx+8>02x^2+kx+8>0 for every real xx is
  1. A. 1515
  2. B. 1616
  3. C. 1414
  4. D. 88
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1515

Since the leading coefficient is positive, the quadratic is positive for all real xx iff the discriminant is negative: k2−64<0k^2-64<0, i.e. −8<k<8-8<k<8. The integers are −7,−6,…,7-7,-6,\ldots,7, which are 1515 values. Using ∣k∣≤8|k|\le8 would add the boundary values where the expression touches zero, giving 1717; strict inequality excludes them.
