Let A and B be sets with A⊂ B. 1. A∩ B=B. 2. B'⊂ A'.

Single correct option

Let AA and BB be sets with A⊂BA\subset B. Consider the following statements:
1. A∩B=BA\cap B=B.
2. B′⊂A′B'\subset A'.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2 only

If A⊂BA\subset B then A∩B=AA\cap B=A, not BB, so statement 1 is false unless A=BA=B. Taking complements reverses inclusion: every element outside BB is also outside AA, so B′⊂A′B'\subset A' and statement 2 is true. Only statement 2 is correct.
