A relation R on the set of natural numbers is defined by aRb if and only if a≤ b. 1. R is reflexive. 2.

Single correct option

A relation RR on the set of natural numbers is defined by aRbaRb if and only if a≤ba\le b. Consider the following statements:
1. RR is reflexive.
2. RR is symmetric.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1 only

Since a≤aa\le a for every natural number aa, RR is reflexive, so statement 1 is true. But 1≤21\le2 while 2≤12\le1 is false, so RR is not symmetric and statement 2 is false. The relation is, however, antisymmetric and transitive, which is a classic confusion with symmetry.
