Single correct option

On the set Z\mathbb{Z} of integers a relation RR is defined by aRbaRb if and only if a−ba-b is divisible by 3. Consider the following statements: 1. RR is an equivalence relation. 2. RR has exactly three distinct equivalence classes. Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Both 1 and 2

a−a=0a-a=0 is divisible by 3 (reflexive); if 3∣a−b3\mid a-b then 3∣b−a3\mid b-a (symmetric); if 3∣a−b3\mid a-b and 3∣b−c3\mid b-c then 3∣a−c3\mid a-c (transitive). So statement 1 is true. Equivalence classes are the residue classes mod 3, namely [0],[1],[2][0],[1],[2], so exactly three. Both are correct.
