If A⊂ B, then B'⊂ A' for subsets of a universal set U. 2. (A∪ B)-C=(A-C)∪(B-C) for any sets A,B,C.

Single correct option

Consider the following statements:
1. If A⊂BA\subset B, then B′⊂A′B'\subset A' for subsets of a universal set UU.
2. (A∪B)−C=(A−C)∪(B−C)(A\cup B)-C=(A-C)\cup(B-C) for any sets A,B,CA,B,C.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) Both 1 and 2

Statement 1: if x∉Bx\notin B then x∉Ax\notin A (since A⊂BA\subset B), so B′⊂A′B'\subset A'; it is true. Statement 2: an element is in (A∪B)−C(A\cup B)-C exactly when it is in AA or BB and not in CC, which is the same as being in A−CA-C or in B−CB-C. Both are correct, as Venn diagrams also confirm.
