Single correct option

On the set {1,2,3,4}\{1,2,3,4\} the relation R={(1,2),(2,3),(3,4)}R=\{(1,2),(2,3),(3,4)\} is given. The least number of ordered pairs that must be added to RR to make it transitive is
  1. A. 22
  2. B. 44
  3. C. 33
  4. D. 66
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 33

Transitivity needs (a,c)(a,c) whenever (a,b),(b,c)∈R(a,b),(b,c)\in R. From (1,2),(2,3)(1,2),(2,3) we need (1,3)(1,3); from (2,3),(3,4)(2,3),(3,4) we need (2,4)(2,4). Once (1,3)(1,3) is added, (1,3),(3,4)(1,3),(3,4) forces (1,4)(1,4). No further pairs arise, so exactly 33 pairs are added. Stopping after the first two direct chains and answering 22 misses the induced pair.
