The number of subsets of \1,2,3,4,5,6\ that contain the element 1 but do not contain the element 6 is

Single correct option

The number of subsets of {1,2,3,4,5,6}\{1,2,3,4,5,6\} that contain the element 11 but do not contain the element 66 is
  1. A. 1616
  2. B. 3232
  3. C. 88
  4. D. 3131
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1616

Fix the two special elements: 11 must be present and 66 must be absent, so only the remaining four elements 2,3,4,52,3,4,5 are free. Each of them can either be included or left out, giving 24=162^4=16 subsets. The answer 3232 counts subsets containing 11 with no condition on 66, and 88 wrongly fixes one more element.
