Let A=\3,6,9,…,30\ and B=\5,10,15,…,30\. The number of elements in A∩ B is

Single correct option

Let A={3,6,9,…,30}A=\{3,6,9,\ldots,30\} and B={5,10,15,…,30}B=\{5,10,15,\ldots,30\}. The number of elements in A∩BA\cap B is
  1. A. 11
  2. B. 33
  3. C. 55
  4. D. 22
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 22

The elements common to both sets are multiples of both 33 and 55, i.e. multiples of lcm⁡(3,5)=15\operatorname{lcm}(3,5)=15. Within 3030 these are 1515 and 3030, so n(A∩B)=2n(A\cap B)=2. The trap is to stop at 1515 alone, or to count 00 because 3030 is the last element of each set; check that the end element belongs to both lists before deciding.
