For any sets A and B: 1. If A⊂ B, then A∪ B=B. 2. A-B=B-A always.

Single correct option

Consider the following statements for any sets AA and BB:
1. If A⊂BA\subset B, then A∪B=BA\cup B=B.
2. A−B=B−AA-B=B-A always.
Which of the statements is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1 only

If A⊂BA\subset B, every element of AA is already in BB, so A∪B=BA\cup B=B: statement 1 is true. For A={1}A=\{1\}, B={2}B=\{2\} we get A−B={1}≠{2}=B−AA-B=\{1\}\ne\{2\}=B-A; the two differences are equal only when A=BA=B. So statement 2 is false.
