Let R be the relation on the set mathbbN defined by a R b if a divides b. Consider: 1. 2. R is antisymmetric.

Single correct option

Let RR be the relation on the set N\mathbb{N} defined by a R ba\,R\,b if aa divides bb. Consider:
1. RR is symmetric.
2. RR is antisymmetric.
Which of the statements is/are correct?
  1. A. 1 only
  2. B. 2 only
  3. C. Both 1 and 2
  4. D. Neither 1 nor 2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 2 only

2 R 42\,R\,4 but 4 R 24\,R\,2 is false, so RR is not symmetric. If a∣ba\mid b and b∣ab\mid a for natural numbers, then a=ba=b, so RR is antisymmetric. Note RR is also reflexive and transitive, so it is a partial order, not an equivalence relation.
