Let A⊂ B with n(A)=3 and n(B)=6. The number of sets C such that A⊆ C⊆ B is

Single correct option

Let A⊂BA\subset B with n(A)=3n(A)=3 and n(B)=6n(B)=6. The number of sets CC such that A⊆C⊆BA\subseteq C\subseteq B is
  1. A. 6
  2. B. 7
  3. C. 8
  4. D. 64
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 8

Every such CC contains all 3 elements of AA and any subset of the remaining 6−3=36-3=3 elements of BB. Hence the count is 23=82^3=8. The trap is to use 26=642^6=64 (all subsets of BB) or to exclude C=AC=A or C=BC=B, which are both allowed because the inclusions are not strict.
