Single correct option

The number of symmetric relations that can be defined on a set with 33 elements is
  1. A. 6464
  2. B. 512512
  3. C. 88
  4. D. 3636
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 6464

A symmetric relation is determined by choosing the 3 diagonal pairs freely and, for each of the (32)=3\binom32=3 unordered pairs of distinct elements, either both or neither ordered pairs. That gives 3+3=63+3=6 independent yes/no choices, so 26=642^6=64. The value 512=29512=2^9 counts all relations, symmetric or not.
