Single correct option

The point that divides the join of (2,−1)(2,-1) and (8,5)(8,5) internally in the ratio 1:21:2 is
  1. A. (6,3)(6,3)
  2. B. (5,2)(5,2)
  3. C. (4,1)(4,1)
  4. D. (3,0)(3,0)
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) (4,1)(4,1)

The section formula gives (1⋅8+2⋅23,1⋅5+2⋅(−1)3)=(4,1)\left(\frac{1\cdot8+2\cdot2}{3},\frac{1\cdot5+2\cdot(-1)}{3}\right)=(4,1). The point (6,3)(6,3) corresponds to the ratio 2:12:1, which is the usual trap of attaching the ratio to the wrong end.
