Three mutually perpendicular vectors vec a, vec b, vec c have magnitudes 1, 2 and 2 respectively. The magnitude of vec a+vec b+vec c is

Single correct option

Three mutually perpendicular vectors a⃗\vec a, b⃗\vec b, c⃗\vec c have magnitudes 11, 22 and 22 respectively. The magnitude of a⃗+b⃗+c⃗\vec a+\vec b+\vec c is
  1. A. 33
  2. B. 55
  3. C. 99
  4. D. 5\sqrt5
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 33

Because the vectors are mutually perpendicular, all cross terms vanish: ∣a⃗+b⃗+c⃗∣2=1+4+4=9|\vec a+\vec b+\vec c|^2=1+4+4=9, so the magnitude is 33. Trap: 5 adds the magnitudes (valid only for parallel vectors), 9 is the square of the answer, and 5\sqrt5 drops one of the two equal terms.
