If vec a=hat i+λhat j+2hat k and vec b=3hat i-hat j+hat k have equal magnitudes, then λ equals

Single correct option

If a⃗=i^+λj^+2k^\vec a=\hat i+\lambda\hat j+2\hat k and b⃗=3i^−j^+k^\vec b=3\hat i-\hat j+\hat k have equal magnitudes, then λ\lambda equals
  1. A. ±11\pm\sqrt{11}
  2. B. ±6\pm\sqrt6
  3. C. ±6\pm6
  4. D. ±2\pm2
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) ±6\pm\sqrt6

∣a⃗∣2=1+λ2+4=5+λ2|\vec a|^2=1+\lambda^2+4=5+\lambda^2 and ∣b⃗∣2=9+1+1=11|\vec b|^2=9+1+1=11. Equal magnitudes give λ2=6\lambda^2=6, so λ=±6\lambda=\pm\sqrt6. Trap: ±11\pm\sqrt{11} forgets the contribution 55 of the other components, and ±6\pm6 forgets to take the square root.
