If [vec a vec b vec c]=vec a·(vec b×vec c)=4, then (vec a+vec b)·[(vec b+vec c)×(vec c+vec a)] equals

Single correct option

If [a⃗  b⃗  c⃗]=a⃗⋅(b⃗×c⃗)=4[\vec a\;\vec b\;\vec c]=\vec a\cdot(\vec b\times\vec c)=4, then (a⃗+b⃗)⋅[(b⃗+c⃗)×(c⃗+a⃗)](\vec a+\vec b)\cdot\big[(\vec b+\vec c)\times(\vec c+\vec a)\big] equals
  1. A. 44
  2. B. 88
  3. C. 1616
  4. D. 00
Show answer and solution

Answer: (B) 88

Expand: (b⃗+c⃗)×(c⃗+a⃗)=b⃗×c⃗+b⃗×a⃗+c⃗×a⃗(\vec b+\vec c)\times(\vec c+\vec a)=\vec b\times\vec c+\vec b\times\vec a+\vec c\times\vec a (since c⃗×c⃗=0⃗\vec c\times\vec c=\vec0). Dotting with a⃗+b⃗\vec a+\vec b, only terms with three distinct vectors survive: a⃗⋅(b⃗×c⃗)+b⃗⋅(c⃗×a⃗)=4+4=8\vec a\cdot(\vec b\times\vec c)+\vec b\cdot(\vec c\times\vec a)=4+4=8. In general the value is 2[a⃗  b⃗  c⃗]2[\vec a\;\vec b\;\vec c].
