If |vec a|=|vec b|=|vec a+vec b| for non-zero vectors, the angle between vec a and vec b is

Single correct option

If ∣a⃗∣=∣b⃗∣=∣a⃗+b⃗∣|\vec a|=|\vec b|=|\vec a+\vec b| for non-zero vectors, the angle between a⃗\vec a and b⃗\vec b is
  1. A. 60∘60^\circ
  2. B. 90∘90^\circ
  3. C. 120∘120^\circ
  4. D. 30∘30^\circ
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 120∘120^\circ

Let each magnitude be kk. Then k2=∣a⃗+b⃗∣2=k2+k2+2k2cos⁡θk^2=|\vec a+\vec b|^2=k^2+k^2+2k^2\cos\theta, so cos⁡θ=−12\cos\theta=-\frac12 and θ=120∘\theta=120^\circ. The answer 60∘60^\circ is the angle for ∣a⃗−b⃗∣=k|\vec a-\vec b|=k instead.
