Numerical answer

A projectile nucleus P (α\alpha-particle, mass number 44, total binding energy 28.0 MeV28.0\ \mathrm{MeV}) strikes a stationary target nucleus T (mass number 1212, total binding energy 92.0 MeV92.0\ \mathrm{MeV}) and the reaction produces two nuclei whose total binding energy is 114.0 MeV114.0\ \mathrm{MeV}. Treat masses as equal to mass numbers in u\mathrm u and use non-relativistic kinematics. The minimum kinetic energy of the projectile in the laboratory frame needed for this reaction to occur (in MeV\mathrm{MeV}) is ______.

Answer: 8

The QQ-value is the increase in total binding energy of the products over the reactants: Q=114.0−(28.0+92.0)=−6.0 MeVQ=114.0-(28.0+92.0)=-6.0\ \mathrm{MeV}, so the reaction is endothermic. At threshold the products move together with the velocity of the centre of mass, so the kinetic energy available for the reaction is only the kinetic energy in the centre-of-mass frame, which must equal ∣Q∣|Q|. In the laboratory frame Kcm=KlabmTmP+mTK_{cm}=K_{lab}\dfrac{m_T}{m_P+m_T}. Setting Kcm=∣Q∣K_{cm}=|Q| gives Kth=∣Q∣ mP+mTmT=6.0×4+1212=8.0 MeVK_{th}=|Q|\,\dfrac{m_P+m_T}{m_T}=6.0\times\dfrac{4+12}{12}=8.0\ \mathrm{MeV}. A common mistake is to take the threshold equal to ∣Q∣|Q| itself, which ignores the kinetic energy that must be retained by the moving centre of mass.
