Single correct option

Two radioactive samples AA and BB contain the same number of nuclei initially. The half-life of AA is 2 h2\ \mathrm{h} and that of BB is 4 h4\ \mathrm{h}. After 8 h8\ \mathrm{h} the ratio of the activity of AA to that of BB is
  1. A. 14\dfrac14
  2. B. 22
  3. C. 18\dfrac18
  4. D. 12\dfrac12
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 12\dfrac12

Activity is λN\lambda N with N=N0e−λt=N0 2−t/TN=N_0e^{-\lambda t}=N_0\,2^{-t/T}. In 8 h8\ \mathrm{h}, sample AA undergoes 44 half-lives, so NA=N016N_A=\dfrac{N_0}{16}, and sample BB undergoes 22 half-lives, so NB=N04N_B=\dfrac{N_0}{4}. The decay constants satisfy λA/λB=TB/TA=2\lambda_A/\lambda_B=T_B/T_A=2. Therefore AAAB=λANAλBNB=2×1/161/4=2×14=12\dfrac{A_A}{A_B}=\dfrac{\lambda_AN_A}{\lambda_BN_B}=2\times\dfrac{1/16}{1/4}=2\times\dfrac14=\dfrac12. Comparing only the numbers of nuclei would give 14\dfrac14, which forgets that the shorter-lived sample has the larger decay constant.
