Single correct option

Two radioactive samples AA and BB have half-lives of 1010 minutes and 2020 minutes and contain the same number of nuclei at t=0t = 0. At t=40t = 40 minutes the ratio of the activity of AA to that of BB is
  1. A. 1:21:2
  2. B. 1:41:4
  3. C. 1:81:8
  4. D. 2:12:1
Show answer and solution

Answer: (A) 1:21:2

After 4040 minutes sample AA has gone through 44 half-lives, so NA=N0/16N_A = N_0/16; sample BB has gone through 22, so NB=N0/4N_B = N_0/4. Activity is λN\lambda N, and λA/λB=TB/TA=2\lambda_A/\lambda_B = T_B/T_A = 2. Hence AAAB=2×1/161/4=2×14=12\dfrac{A_A}{A_B} = 2\times\dfrac{1/16}{1/4} = 2\times\dfrac14 = \dfrac12. The ratio 1:41:4 is the ratio of the numbers of surviving nuclei, not of the activities, because the shorter-lived sample has the larger decay constant.
