Single correct option

Two radioactive samples AA and BB contain equal numbers of nuclei at t=0t=0. Their half-lives are 2020 minutes and 4040 minutes respectively. The activities of the two samples become equal after a time of
  1. A. 6060 min
  2. B. 2020 min
  3. C. 8080 min
  4. D. 4040 min
Show answer and solution

Answer: (D) 4040 min

Activity is λN\lambda N with N=N0e−λtN=N_0e^{-\lambda t}. With λA=2λB\lambda_A=2\lambda_B and equal initial numbers, AAAB=λAλBe−(λA−λB)t=2⋅2−t/20⋅2t/40=2 1−t/40\dfrac{A_A}{A_B}=\dfrac{\lambda_A}{\lambda_B}e^{-(\lambda_A-\lambda_B)t}=2\cdot2^{-t/20}\cdot2^{t/40}=2^{\,1-t/40}. Setting the ratio to 11 gives 1−t40=01-\dfrac t{40}=0, so t=40t=40 min. Check: at 4040 min, NA=N0/4N_A=N_0/4 and NB=N0/2N_B=N_0/2, so λANA=2λB⋅N04=λBN02=λBNB\lambda_AN_A=2\lambda_B\cdot\dfrac{N_0}{4}=\lambda_B\dfrac{N_0}{2}=\lambda_BN_B.
