Single correct option

For a certain metal the stopping potential is 2 V2\ \mathrm{V} for light of frequency ν\nu and 6 V6\ \mathrm{V} for light of frequency 2ν2\nu. Taking hc=12400 eV A˚hc=12400\ \mathrm{eV\,\AA}, the threshold wavelength of the metal is
  1. A. 3100 A˚3100\ \mathrm{\AA}
  2. B. 4133 A˚4133\ \mathrm{\AA}
  3. C. 6200 A˚6200\ \mathrm{\AA}
  4. D. 12400 A˚12400\ \mathrm{\AA}
Show answer and solution

Answer: (C) 6200 A˚6200\ \mathrm{\AA}

Einstein's equation gives hν=ϕ+eV0h\nu=\phi+eV_0. For the two frequencies: hν=ϕ+2h\nu=\phi+2 and 2hν=ϕ+62h\nu=\phi+6 (energies in eV). Subtracting the first from the second: hν=4 eVh\nu=4\ \mathrm{eV}, hence ϕ=4−2=2 eV\phi=4-2=2\ \mathrm{eV}. The threshold wavelength is λ0=hcϕ=124002=6200 A˚\lambda_0=\dfrac{hc}{\phi}=\dfrac{12400}{2}=6200\ \mathrm{\AA}. Check: the threshold frequency is ν0=ϕ/h=ν/2\nu_0=\phi/h=\nu/2, so λ0=2λ\lambda_0=2\lambda where λ=124004=3100 A˚\lambda=\dfrac{12400}{4}=3100\ \mathrm{\AA} is the wavelength of the first light.
